The journey to build a 20-ft. octopus.

From salvaged metal and donated fabric to a living reef — Octopolis travels an extraordinary path from the desert to the ocean floor.

The Journey Begins with Salvage

The Journey Begins with Salvage

Octopolis begins with a big vision: a 20-foot octopus built from salvaged, found, and donated materials — reclaimed metal and fabric given new purpose.

Building the Structure in California

Building the Structure in California

In Northern California, fabricators construct the giant steel framework that forms the body, head, and arms.

03
Building the Skin in Illinois

Building the Skin in Illinois

In Central Illinois, volunteers and artists create the textured skin from hundreds of patchwork fabric pieces sewn into massive panels.

04
Two Parts, One Purpose

Two Parts, One Purpose

Skin and structure are built over 2,000 miles apart, then brought together into a single monumental work of art.

05
Assembly at Burning Man

Assembly at Burning Man

In August, Octopolis is fully assembled in the Nevada desert, rising as an immersive, larger-than-life experience.

06
Education Through Wonder

Education Through Wonder

More than 50,000 people are expected to explore her interior, learning about octopus intelligence, reefs, and ocean conservation.

07
A Second Life

A Second Life

After the burn she travels to Santa Fe Railyard Park, continuing as a public art installation and educational experience.

08
Beyond Land

Beyond Land

Her patchwork skin — carrying the fingerprints of thousands of makers — is removed and repurposed into future art.

09
From Art to Habitat

The structure is deployed into the ocean as part of a coral reef restoration effort, becoming habitat for marine life.

A Mother’s Mission

A Mother’s Mission

At heart, she tells the story of a mother octopus bringing life back to a dying reef — a symbol of resilience and renewal.

She’s two things at once.

Octopolis is a 20-foot illuminated octopus with interactive arms stretching 30–36 feet — a large-scale metal sculpture with integrated lighting, sensors, and multi-sensory elements inside and outside the form.

Her head is a communal gathering space: ocean sounds, bubble effects, cooling misters, and an overhead view of her three glowing hearts. Her eyes are built from locally sourced driftwood.
